On the twelfth day of Country Music #CMchat’s 25 Days of Country Christmas, the music gods brought to we, the vocal stylings of Ms. Kellie Pickler.
At the 2013 CMA Country Christmas show, Kellie Pickler performed “The Man with the Bag,” a 1950 song that suggests that those who were “extra special good” during the year would receive a visit from Mr. Kringle. Kellie’s performance was done big band style, a genre of music with which she is seemingly comfortable. With the backing of a full band, including woodwinds and brass, Kellie’s equal parts enormous and gorgeous voice serves as the main instrument on the stage, perfectly embracing the mid-century vibe of the holiday hit.
If Santa Claus’s barometer is based on whether people have “done everything you should extra special good,” Kellie surely got a visit from St. Nick last year after this performance. In fact, what Kellie is able to do with this song is take a more than half century old tune and make it enjoyable for younger generations by adding the right amounts of sexy and sweet. Couple Kellie’s vocals with the arrangement and a crew of dancing newsboys, and it far surpasses the “extra special good” threshold and enters the realm of extraordinary.
