As we count down to Christmas, there is no artist more deserving of being celebrated on this 15th Day of Christmas than Reba McEntire. In addition to being chosen as today’s video for Country Music #CMchat’s 25 Days of Country Christmas, Reba will be honored as the inaugural Nash Icon at tonight’s American Country Countdown Awards.
While she’ll be honored for her expansive career that spans Broadway, television, film and music, it’s safe to say that she’s more notably celebrated for her impressive catalogue of hits. And while there’s “Fancy,” “Whoever’s in New England” and “The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia,” Reba also has a deep collection of Christmas recordings, none more endearing or typically Reba than her playful take on the 1952 classic, “I Saw Mama Kissing Santa Claus.”
On her version, Reba puts a personal tale on the track of a tot catching mom canoodling with the famous man in red. As shes sings, we become aware that the observant kiddo just happens to be named Shelby, as in Reba’s youngest son with husband Narvel Blackstock.
Christmas toys all over the place, little Shelby wears a funny smile on his face,” Reba sings bemusedly. “Shelby has a secret and a secret he must share, he wants to tell somebody, so he tells his teddy bear…
She then launches into a playful country version of the classic song, making it the perfect addition to any Christmas playlist. With its cute story and uptemo instrumentation, Reba’s take on “I Saw Mama Kissing Santa Claus” is the perfect lilt for your Christmas mix!
