On the thirteenth day of Country Music #CMchat’s 25 Days of Country Christmas, we bring a present from birthday girl Taylor Swift.
Back in 2007, Taylor Swift released her country Christmas EP Sounds of the Season exclusively to Target stores, but it has since gone on to be released digitally as well under the title, The Taylor Swift Holiday Collection. The project has five songs including three traditional Christmas tracks and two Swift-penned tunes.
Somehow over the years Taylor has gotten the reputation of being full of post-break up songs…this is another one to add that list. The song tells the tale of Taylor’s first Christmas without a love interest. The melancholy song is laced with memories of the happy past and saddened present. The bridge reads “Merry Christmas, everybody. That’ll have to be something I just say this year.”
The original song is one that has been on my Christmas playlist for years. If you can think back to the “Teardrops on My Guitar” and “Tim McGraw” days, this song fits right in with the classic Swift sound. The vulnerability in her voice weeps as she wishes for a new love during the holiday season. “Christmases When You Were Mine” has already been released for seven years, but it’s still one to look forward to hearing.
