April is Autism Awareness month, with April 2nd being national #autismawareness day. Autism is a developmental disorder that effects the brain and can make social interaction difficult. Many autistic children/adults are nonverbal and others struggle to understand every day social situations, life skills and emotions.
Autism is something that hits close to home for me since my four year old son was diagnosed nearly seven months ago. If you are a parent, friend or relative of someone with Autism then I assure you that you’ll find some type of connection with these seven songs. Below is a list of songs that scream out “kindness matters.” You’ll find songs about hope, love and respect here. These songs aren’t just for those touched by Autism but also for anyone who struggles with a disability.
Remember, it doesn’t take much to be kind. Show compassion to everyone you meet. I hope these songs touch your heart the way they have touched mine.
1. Lee Ann Womack – I Hope You Dance
If you have a family member or friend who struggles with Autism or any other disability then this song is for you. We only want the best for our loved ones. We want them to soar. As a parent, I’ll always hope my child chooses to dance instead of sit on the sidelines.
2. Mark Wills – Don’t Laugh At Me
This song has such an important lesson. We are all the same. Be kind to one another. We are all different, yet the same. With touching lyrics such as “In God’s eyes we’re all the same, some day we’ll all have perfect wings, don’t laugh at me,” it’s bound to bring you to tears.
3. Rascal Flatts – My Wish
Again, this is a song about hope. Every parent, relative and friend wants the best for his/her loved ones. Autism is a daily struggle and you have to always have faith. Make wishes every day.
4. Miranda Lambert – All Kinds of Kinds
In this great big world there are so many different types of people. This song puts so much into perspective. In order to keep this world spinning, we need all kinds of kinds. Don’t look at Autism as a curse, it’s just who that individual is. Embrace it.
5. Tommy Shane Steiner – What if She’s an Angel
This is such a beautiful song. It’s story about being kind to those who aren’t able to care for themselves. What if God sent them here to make sure you are doing what He expects of you? Hey, it’s possible.
6. Tim Mcgraw – One Of These Days
A powerful song about just wanting to be accepted, it just fits. Although they may not show it, people with Autism just want to be loved and accepted. They just aren’t able to communicate that properly.
7. Brad Paisley – Shattered Glass
Last but not least, my favorite. I dedicate this song to my son Kierce and to every child out there struggling with developmental disabilities. You are destined for great things. You are strong. I believe in you. God has great plans for you. Never stop fighting. Never quit, until all your pieces fit.
Do you have a song that reminds you of someone with Autism? I would love to know what it is. Tweet me @brittwv.
