If you have listened to country radio within the last few years, then you have undoubtedly come across one of Adam Sanders songwriting successes. As the co-writer of number ones recorded by Cole Swindell and Dustin Lynch, plus song cuts on albums for megastars like Dierks Bentley and Luke Bryan, Adam Sanders has proven ready to break through with a smash hit under his own name. His generationally transcending latest single. “I’ve Been Meaning to Call” might be the answer.
Following the country music vibe of the early 2000s, “I’ve Been Meaning to Call” is a classic storyteller song that transcends generations with its relatability. A darling voicemail from Adam’s mom begins the track, and throughout the song, you’ll hear a mellow, clean sound, with just drums, bass, electric guitars, and keys. Lyrically, it tells the story of a young adult who is out on his own, whose courtesy check-in call to his mom goes forgotten until her $50 birthday check reminds him to give her a ring. The second verse flashes to the man finally finding “the one” and being so excited to tell his mom all about her, while calling to ask when he can bring her home. It finishes with a full-circle moment of the man having a daughter of his own, and the little girl dealing with the death of her grandpa, prompting the young man to call his mom yet again. “I’ve Been Meaning to Call” will put life into perspective while pulling on your heartstrings with lyrics like, “I can’t imagine how quiet that house is with him gone. Mama, I promise I’ll call more often from now on.”
Clearly inspired by his mom, Adam Sanders further explained what “I’ve Been Meaning to Call” means to him. “This song is hands down the most personal song I’ve ever written. You know, I think we get so caught up in our own daily lives that a lot of times we forget to pick up the phone and call people we love. More times than not, we just text or email each other, and the actual phone calls get pushed aside until something significant happens in our lives. More than anything, I hope that upon hearing the message in this song, it makes people want to pick up the phone and call someone they love.”
Adam Sanders told #CMchat that before “I’ve Been Meaning to Call” was born, it was originally slated to be the “country version” of Adele’s “Hello” until co-writer, Josh Kerr, suggested an edit that ended up changing the course of the song. It may have taken a few attempts to come up with the finished product, but we’re glad it took a turn for a new direction because this song is certainly something special.
