All Twangs Considered: Andrew Pope

Andrew Pope, an Alabama country boy, brings southern charm, and a soulful voice to his first release.  We spoke about his album, Stoned On The One, due out May 5th, featuring appearances by The Bellamy Brothers, Robby Turner, Mickey Raphael, and Joe Spivey. Andrew reminds me of the country I was raised on… somewhat Kenny Rogers, with a dash of Merle, Hank Jr, Waylon, and a pinch of something all his own. He’s been described by Bobby Bare as “The Future of Country Music.”

Pope has written with Bare, Larry Gatlin, William Michael Morgan, and Brent Cobb, among others. A song inspired by Merle Haggard is one of the many highlights on this debut album. When Pope met Haggard, the two had a conversation, and spoke of writing “If I Go Crazy.” Merle’s health declined quickly after that, and the co-write was not to be. Pope penned it after his passing.
