Country Music #CMchat is excited to announce that Angaleena Presley will be joining us for a Twitterview, Wednesday November 19th at 6pPT/9pET. Presley, formerly of the country music trio Pistol Annies, recently embarked on a solo career, releasing her debut offering, American Middle Class, earlier this month. Following the lead single off the album, “Ain’t No Man,” Presley has now released “Pain Pills,” along with an accompanying and chilling music video.
Inspired to write the song due to the death of a friend, Presley explained to Radio.com:
I started [that song] as I was on my way home from a funeral. A friend of mine from high school OD’d [and] at the funeral the mom was walking in going, ‘Oh they had a heart problem. It was a heart issue.’ We knew what was going on. This is when I realized, this is starting to become a problem.
Recognizing the prescription medication epidemic that is plaguing the coal mining communities, Presley picked up the pen, her guitar, and a microphone and addressed the struggle. The result is her new single, “Pain Pills.”
The song and video discuss how people mask pain with prescription medication, often to a fatal extent, which leaves their survivors cleaning up messes and covering up the truth. An honest approach to the subject of people attempting to suppress problems medicinally, Presley applies her Tanya Tucker’esque vocals to tell the unfortunate tale, including lyrics such as “a little bit of hurt is surely gonna kill.”
