I know we’ve all been guilty of enjoying a song so much that we just have to belt it out. But, when one guy decided to to sing Blake Shelton’s “Boys ‘Round Here” on blast during a flight on Christmas day from Atlanta to Los Angeles, things took a turn. Almost literally.
The dude decided to go full on karaoke star and it disturbed several other passengers on the plane until the flight was diverted to Albuquerque. The unidentified man, who was from Wichita, Kansas, says the whole thing was a misunderstanding, which officials likely agreed with, as he has not been charged with any crime.
According to KWCH in Wichita, the passenger was reportedly wearing his headphones as he sang Shelton’s song aloud. Fellow passengers around him started to complain about the excess noise to flight attendants, and a passenger in front of the man turned around and asked him to stop singing. That’s when the man allegedly became defensive.
I asked the gentlemen, sir what am I doing wrong? Can you tell me what I’m doing to you sir? All you have to do sir is talk to me about it.
The man went on to say he felt racially profiled by the passengers around him on the flight, including a woman who kept turning around and staring at him.
I simply asked her if I held my hands up and said I couldn’t breathe, would you feel comfortable?
That end statement was in reference to the Eric Garner case in New York City, which notably caused many riots across the country.
As the disagreement continued to gain momentum, the man said he became very upset and got emotional, visiting the bathroom several times so passengers wouldn’t see him cry. His actions “became a concern to the flight crew” and passengers were notified that the plane would be diverted to Albuquerque.
Apparently, the people in charge of making detainment decisions didn’t think he was that dangerous as the Shelton fan wasn’t held for long and was later able to catch another flight to Los Angeles on a different airline. But for people on the flight, the incident was pretty memorable.
It’s not exactly what you want to hear in the middle of your flight, to know that there’s a security issue on board and being met as the gate with multiple police cars. It’s kind of alarming.
