Well, Fox News…yes I said Fox News….covered a pretty cool story when openly gay country music singer Brandy Clark discussed being accepted by the Nashville community.
While Brandy isn’t the first openly gay singer nominated, she is the most current and said this:
“I feel so fortunate to be in a time where I am embraced completely as who I am and I don’t have to hide who I am in any way,” Clark said. “I hope that we’ve broken some boundaries and things are changing. I feel very included in the country music community.”
Clark has been a catalyst in many recent country hits as a writer, but her own songs haven’t seen as much success. In fact, her album didn’t even have a single song make a country chart. So, it truly makes the fact she’s one of Nashville’s brightest stars even more impressive. Oh and that little CMA Nomination is also a pretty big worthy mention, too.
But, let’s strip down any labeling of who she happens to choose to want to kiss, and address the fact that Brandy’s songwriting is truly bar none. She’s not afraid to touch topics like pot smoking house wives, murderous lovers, and pain killer addictions.
“I had been passed on a lot,” said Clark, 37, during a recent interview at her management office on Music Row. “I think it’s because I didn’t really fit what is a mainstream country artist. I was over 30 and over a size 2. I was kinda more your average woman than your average super model, which is why my music resonates though.”
It helps having friends like Kacey Musgraves and Eric Church sing your praises to open up the eyes on the industry. Heaven knows country music is better off because Brandy is a part of it.
