This week’s Country Music #CMchat One to Watch is the brilliant (to say the least) Caitlyn Smith. Caitlyn is a young songwriter who hails from Cannon Falls, Minnesota, but made her way to Nashville to follow a dream. For most, a leap of faith remains just that; however, for Caitlyn it proved to be a life-altering decision that not only changed the course of her life, but changed the lives of musicians and fans alike.
Think of the names of some of your favorite artists. Caitlyn has likely had a hand in one of his/her/their albums. From Jason Aldean to Rascal Flatts to Lady Antebellum, Caitlyn has penned tracks for each of these megastars in country music. Also in Caitlyn’s catalog is platinum hit song, “Wasting All These Tears,” recorded and driven to success by Cassadee Pope, and debut single for Danielle Bradbery, “The Heart of Dixie.” Most recently you can find the brilliant work of Caitlyn in a duet, “You Can’t Make Old Friends,” recorded by iconic country singers, Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton. In the very near future (November 11th to be exact) you will find two of her songs on none other than Garth Brooks’ new album.
Additionally, Caitlyn is no stranger to television. You see, there is this little show called Nashville on ABC and Caitlyn (along with Trent Dabbs) penned hit song, “Don’t Put Dirt On My Grave Just Yet,” performed by Hayden Panettiere. Caitlyn is also professionally linked to the Number 1 hit songwriter, Brett James (nineteen, yes nineteen, Number 1 songs), as Brett mentors Caitlyn and the two often write together (i.e. “The Heart of Dixie”).
Wow. I’m tired from just listing all of Caitlyn’s songwriting successes! And to think … that is just scratching the surface of what this artist has on her resume.
Now, let’s talk a little bit about Caitlyn’s vocal abilities. Jessica Northey and I had the distinct honor of witnessing Caitlyn perform at a songwriters’ round at Atlantis in the Bahamas. Before we arrived in paradise, we heard of Caitlyn and her work, but never did we expect to find the incredible talent that awaited us. Though she performed some familiar tunes, like Cassadee’s hit, she also introduced some new material to the crowd. Specifically, we heard “Tacoma,” one of the cuts that will be on Garth’s album (and can be heard below). The crowd was awestruck, a pin could be heard dropping, and the performance concluded in a standing ovation.
Luckily for fans, next on Caitlyn’s agenda is her EP, Everything to You. The seven-track album will be released on October 28th, reintroducing Caitlyn to Music City as a singer, as well as a songwriter. You can get a sneak peek of the album by listening to its title track below.
This is just the beginning for Caitlyn Smith — a talent on both sides of the music. Country Music #CMchat’s team is filled with fans of this young, budding, and well-rounded artist, and each of us is eager to see what her bright future has in store!
