Carrie Underwood’s Greatest Hits: Decade #1 will be released this Tuesday, December 9th. The two discs will serve to commemorate the last ten years of Carrie’s life in the country music spotlight.
Included on the two-disc set of the best of Carrie’s decade as a superstar songstress are a collection of her most notable songs and two new releases. With one of the new tracks, “Something in the Water,” already floating its way to Number 1 and receiving a Grammy nomination, Greatest Hits: Decade #1 (or #CUX1, as used on Twitter) is setting the stage to be a hugely successful offering.
The other new cut on the album, “Little Toy Guns,” has already caused a significant stir among Carrie’s fans, leaving them chomping at the bit for a sneak peek of the song that Carrie teased in a recent interview.
There’s these characters in the song, and there’s a little girl, and she hears her parents fighting, as unfortunately a lot of kids do. So it’s basically her saying, in her words, I wish their words weren’t real. I wish they were like little toy guns and they didn’t hurt you. I’ve seen it firsthand from different people in my life and seen how the tumultuous parental relationship between each other can affect a child. So that’s kind of what it’s about, but it’s a really tempo-driven song as well, so it’s kind of a bit of a juxtaposition as far as the story content and the music.
Carrie penned the song with Chris DeStefano and Hillary Lindsey, renowned songwriters with whom Carrie has a stellar catalog. The powerful lyrics, in part, go:
Little toy guns, no sting, no hurt, no blood; just a bang bang rolling off your tongue (wish words hurt like little toy guns). Yeah, no smoke, no bullet, no kick from the trigger when you pull it. No pain, no damage done (wish words hurt like little toy guns). And just a bang bang rolling off your tongue (wish words hurt like little toy guns).
In a song that sounds as though it could be the prequel to Carrie’s hit and title track off her last album, “Blown Away,” the song reminds people that their words can slice through others as easily as a knife. I recently read a line in a book – “be a little kinder than you have to.” That is a lesson that can be extracted from even just the short clip of “Little Toy Guns” below.
You can hear the full version of this track on Carrie’s Greatest Hits: Decade #1, available on Tuesday, December 9th. Use the iTunes banner below to pre-order the double disc set.
