Carrie Underwood hit her social media accounts to share that her next single will be the emotionally powerful and eye-opening “Little Toy Guns” off her Greatest Hits: Decade #1 album.
The second of the two new songs on the double disc compilation (the first being hit song “Something in the Water”), “Little Toy Guns” is a song with a huge message. Carrie’s new single teaches a lesson to those with loose lips, sharp tongues, and minimal filters. In discussing the song prior to the release of her greatest hits album, Carrie explained:
There’s these characters in the song, and there’s a little girl, and she hears her parents fighting, as unfortunately a lot of kids do. So it’s basically her saying, in her words, I wish their words weren’t real. I wish they were like little toy guns and they didn’t hurt you. I’ve seen it firsthand from different people in my life and seen how the tumultuous parental relationship between each other can affect a child. So that’s kind of what it’s about, but it’s a really tempo-driven song as well, so it’s kind of a bit of a juxtaposition as far as the story content and the music.
What makes this song especially unique is that its words are those which would generally comprise a power ballad, but, rather, the music is strong, consisting of enormous instrumentation, creating a juxtaposition of sounds. The chorus cries:
Little toy guns, no sting, no hurt, no blood; just a bang bang rolling off your tongue (wish words hurt like little toy guns). Yeah, no smoke, no bullet, no kick from the trigger when you pull it. No pain, no damage done (wish words hurt like little toy guns). And just a bang bang rolling off your tongue (wish words hurt like little toy guns).
A music video for “Little Toy Guns” will also be released this Friday, January 30th, according to Carrie’s social media:
