Chely Wright, a country artist who made her way on to the scene twenty years ago, is back with a bang as loud as the one she made in 1994 with her debut. The 1995 ACM Top New Female Vocalist intermittently took time away from recording throughout her career (most recently releasing a 2010 studio album and a 2011 EP), but is ready for a return. This time, Wright decided to call on her fans to support her reintroduction to an ever-evolving industry.
Relying on funding platform, Kickstarter, Wright set a forty-five day campaign with the goal of raising $175,000, providing reward opportunities to fans that ranged from meet and greets to a special wedding appearance and performance for one lucky fan. With the recent success that Wright’s peer, Jo Dee Messina, experienced with Kickstarter, Wright was hopeful her fans would come through. And did they ever! The campaign raised $250,000; an amount which will also allow her to produce a music video in conjunction with the album.
“It went gangbusters,” she told Rolling Stone Country. “It was the sixth most successful music campaign in Kickstarter’s history and the Number One most successful campaign in country music in Kickstarter history. I say that, really, to just brag on my fans and the enthusiasm they have.”
Wright currently has about one-half of the album written and is anticipating a mid-2015 release.
