#BreakingTheIce: CJ Solar

Baton Rouge native and southern rock badass CJ Solar made huge waves on country radio when his current single “Airplane” landed. His authentic vocals and musical talent stands out from the rest. Solar is 50 percent southern rock and 50 percent straight country. He is a special gem that has been getting attention over the last year. His music is raw and gritty, it’s real art.

Where are you answering these questions from & what are you wearing?

I’m answering these questions from my office at Sea Gayle Music on Music Row in Nashville, TN! And I’m wearing a denim button-up and camo pants… haha

What’s your official title and favorite thing about what you do?

My official title I guess is Singer/Songwriter… for me it’s hard to do one without the other! And my favorite thing about it is telling my story and connecting with people!

What are 3 things you CANNOT live without?

Hmm… First and foremost, Mexican food… then band t-shirts and Mario Kart on N64!

What’s the first concert you’ve ever attended?

My first concert ever was when my parents took my brothers and I to see the Doobie Brothers in Biloxi, MS!

How long have you been playing music?

I started playing guitar when I was 7 and I found my Dad’s old guitar in the closet!

What’s the hardest life lesson you’ve learned?

Get to know people a little bit before you immediately live with and trust them… sometimes your stuff starts to walk away…

Do you have a favorite restaurant or hang out spot in music city?

I love Martins and Edley’s because I live super close and love BBQ… only second to Mexican food but can’t pick a favorite for that!

If you could duet with any female artist, who would you pick and why?

I’d have to go with Alison Krauss… Greatest voice ever!!

Who is your favorite country singer from the 90s?

Joe Diffie, hands down.

Besides music, do you have any other talents or hobbies?

Well like I said earlier, I can’t live without Mario Kart… the band and I play it on the road and my drummer Nick lives next door and we play about every day… past that I enjoy target shooting and playing guitar way too loud!

Beer or whiskey?

I don’t discriminate… haha

What’s one gift you will never forget?

My parents got me a mountain board for my 13th birthday… I thought it was going to be a guitar and was so butthurt when I opened it that they still tell me that’s what they’re getting me for my birthday every year.

What current event has your eyes and ears? What are you doing about it?

March Madness is about to start and I’ll probably lose about $20 filling out a bracket here at the office… haha

How do you think songwriters play a vital role in music today?

Songwriters play a huge role in helping the artists tell their stories in fresh ways… It’s getting harder and harder for songwriters to make a living these days so hopefully, the industry can find a better way to compensate writers for their songs before they’re all gone!

What’s one superpower you wish you had?

Always wanted to fly… then I could be a super great basketball player and finally know what its like to dunk… haha

You’re making your favorite sandwich… what’s on it?

Ham and cheese!

Name one artist of any genre besides country that you are a fan of and tell us why?

Always loved 90’s grunge growing up, along with Country music and Southern Rock… Hard picking between all of Chris Cornell’s bands and Scott Weiland’s bands for a favorite that isn’t country!

What makes you laugh out loud?

It doesn’t take much to get me laughing but one of the funniest things I saw recently was that video going around facebook of the dog trying to catch food in the air and it hitting his face… poor guy couldn’t do it but it had me dying!

What’s been the highlight of your career thus far?

I think my most recent highlight was getting my first top 20 song as a writer for the song ‘Up Down‘ which Morgan Wallen and Florida Georgia Line have out right now!

Fill in the blank: Country music inspires me because …

It’s songs about real life that everyone including myself can relate too and there’s nothing more powerful than that! Nothing like when a new song hits you just right and gets you feeling something!
