Cole Swindell has been tap dancing all over the charts with hit songs “Chillin’ It” and “Hope You Get Lonely Tonight,” so it should come as no surprise that his next single, “Ain’t Worth the Whiskey,” is already making an impact in the country music industry. Experiencing the success of two songs simultaneously is something Swindell is no stranger to, as his first two singles kept each other company on SiriusXM The Highway’s Hot 45 Countdown many times. The two tracks also broke into the Top 5 of US Country Airplay and Top 10 of US Country, making Swindell a country music household name.
This weekend, Swindell’s next release, “Ain’t Worth the Whiskey,” debuted on The Highway’s countdown, slightly edging out its predecessor, but ensuring that the drop of one Swindell song off the countdown wouldn’t leave fans longing for a bonus taste of this talented artist.
“Ain’t Worth the Whiskey” is the antithesis of “Hope You Get Lonely Tonight,” as, on this track, Swindell couldn’t care less if the woman on his mind is lonely. In fact, based on the mood made evident by the lyrics, he likely hopes she is lonely! “Whiskey” is a song about a breakup that obviously has Swindell hurting, but he refuses to admit that drowning his ex’s memory is his intention. Instead, he makes it pointedly clear that he remembers to forget her with every last drink. To prove his comfortability with his independence and the fact that he doesn’t miss her at all, Swindell sings:
I’ll drink to a country song, to another long work week gone, and I’ll raise my glass to a long lost buddy I ain’t seen. I might stay for one more round or I might close this place down, but don’t think for a second I’m out to drown your memory. Baby, you ain’t worth the whiskey.
“Whiskey” provides Swindell fans with the same uniquely sexy and gravelly vocals that attracted them in droves to songs past. However, this time Swindell uses his natural instrument to issue a polite “I’m too good for you” message to a former flame. Undoubtedly, “Whiskey” is a clever follow-up to “Hope You Get Lonely Tonight,” upping the tempo a notch without landing on the other end of the spectrum where “Chillin’ It” sits. Swindell’s new release also shows a different side of his personality — the man who is checking his vulnerability at the door, lifting his chin, and even if he’s lying to convince himself he’s alright, he’s moving on starting tonight.
At this juncture, Swindell has not made a wrong move yet with the songs he has released to radio and “Ain’t Worth the Whiskey” should continue his streak toward ongoing success. A relatable song that envelopes all the components of a modern day country music hit, this offering should find a home on SiriusXM’s The Highway and radio stations nationwide in the short-term.
