Concert Review: @KipMooreMusic & @CanaanSmith Swoon on Valentine’s Day

What better way to send a Valentine’s Day than at a country concert? Luckily for those in Madison, WI, Kip Moore and Canaan Smith rolled through town on February 14th. Canaan Smith is recently married, with Kip Moore sharing with the crowd how incredibly single he is. The crowd was much of the same: a group of singles in a crowd of lovers. One thing that’s for sure is everyone who left the concert had a damn good night.

The concert started with Canaan Smith rocking with full band. Canaan took the stage singing “Hole In A Bottle” dressed a leather jacket and trucker cap – from the moment he stepped on the stage, it was evident that it was going to be a good night. Canaan has been making his way around the country with touring acts such as Sugarland, Dierks Bentley, and Florida Georgia Line. After his run with Kip, he will be making his way around the country with Dan+Shay in support of his self-titled EP that will be released March 23rd. We got a sampling of the 5 songs in addition to three songs that aren’t on the disc and an impressive cover of Nick Jonas’ “Jealous.” After 45 minutes, the crowd that was largely unfamiliar with the newcomer prior to the night were all fans. Canaan made the effort to gain their support by joining them at the merch booth after his set.

When Kip Moore hit the stage, you knew exactly who the crowd was there to see. Kicking off his set with “Wild Ones,” the crowd never came to a lull. Kip had his signature hat and ‘bro tank’ as he performed for the in the freezing city. The heat was definitely brought to the Orpheum Theatre as he performed 18 songs – some new, some old, some covers.

Having one of the most unique sounds in country music, the fans knew what to expect musically from Kip. Having only released one album, he played many of his old tunes, particularly the hits like “Beer Money,” “Hey Pretty Girl,” and “Somethin’ Bout A Truck.” His sophomore album is expected to be released this year (if the label chooses to finally put it out). Kip expressed his passion for the upcoming project and gave us a hint playing the singles like “I’m To Blame” in addition to crowd favorite “Backseat” among others.

One thing Kip has going for him in addition to his signature sound is his killer stage presence. Having worked his way up through the bars and honky tonks it’s no surprise that Kip has perfected the craft of putting on a show. Between songs, he joked with the crowd explaining his hatred of selfies, calling out the one section of the theatre that wasn’t on their feet (they soon stood up), and explained his three stages of a break up. The show was a memorable one. In Kip’s words “This isn’t ******* Finding Nemo, this is a damn concert.” He took that statement to heart and gave the crowd a show worth every dollar of their hard earned paychecks.
