The American Music Awards (“AMAs”) were created in 1973 by Dick Clark. Originally, the show was intended to directly compete with The Grammy Awards, but has since grown wings and has earned the respect of the industry in its own right.
While the Grammy nominations and winners are selected by the people who make up the Recording Academy, the AMA nomination determinations rely on a mix of both sales and popularity. Everything from sales and airplay to social media and online video streaming are melded together to pull forth a handful of nominees for each category.
Country music represented well this year, even scoring a nomination in the coveted Artist of the Year category, where Luke Bryan received a nod among some of the biggest names in Top 40 music (Iggy Azalea, Katy Perry, Lorde, One Direction, and more). In country specific categories, the following received AMA 2014 nominations:

- Garth Brooks, Blame It on My Roots: Five Decades of Influences
- Eric Church, The Outsiders
- Brantley Gilbert, Just as I Am
