On the seventeenth day of Country Music #CMchat’s 25 Days of Country Christmas, we blow the dust off of a gift from the one and only Dolly Parton.
“Hard Candy Christmas” was originally included in the Broadway Hit Musical The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas. A few years after the Broadway version, a movie was produced that starred none other than Dolly Parton aside Burt Reynolds.
Although the song wasn’t intended to be a holiday classic, Dolly Parton’s version of the song made it’s was up to #8 on the country charts in November 1982 with the release of the film. The song was later included on Kenny & Dolly’s Once Upon a Christmas album in 1998.
“I’ll be fine and dandy / Lord it’s like a hard candy christmas / I’m barely getting through tomorrow / But still I won’t let / Sorrow bring me way down.”
The season doesn’t appear to be merry for Parton as she sings about not letting circumstances bring her down. Whether she dyes her hair, sleeps late, or gets drunk on wine, Dolly Parton will be just fine this Christmas. Listen to Dolly’s version of “Hard Candy Christmas” below.
