Song Review: Craig Morgan – When I’m Gone

I’m not going to lie to you for one second. I am more than a little prejudiced when it comes to Craig Morgan. Years ago, when I was working at WDKN in Dickson, TN – and Craig worked for the City, he would sometimes come by the station and play his guitar on the air. One of my favorite memories of my radio years was getting to premiere his 2000 debut CD on the station. He is a hometown boy who has represented the area with class!

Over the years, Morgan has built up quite a considerable career – to say the least. He has notched up hits such as “Redneck Yacht Club,” “That’s What I Love About Sunday,” and last year’s “Wake Up Lovin’ You,” which I do think was the single best performance of his career – not counting “Look At ‘Em Fly,” a cut from one of his previous albums. But, I’ve got to tell you that track might have a little bit of competition for that title.

For this, his first single from a new project on Black River, Morgan teams up with Byron Gallimore, one of the most respected producers in town. If the rest of the album is as solid as this single, I predict big things from Morgan in the near future! This song is country as it gets. But, the lyrics – about a personal legacy that hopefully makes an impact on everyone around him – seem to resonate a little bit deeper than ever before. I don’t know if Morgan could have performed these lyrics with as much sincerity when he first started. Simply put, you’ve got to live it sometimes to sing about it – and Morgan shines pretty bright here doing just that!
