On the seventh day of Country Music #CMchat’s 25 Days of Country Christmas, we’re asking the important questions with Darius Rucker and his track “What God Wants for Christmas.” While the song was only released this year as a part of his Home for the Holidays album, it’s already bound for classic status, intermingling a current sound with a song that touches upon the reason for the season.
In “What God Wants for Christmas,” Rucker wonders just that. Basically he takes the idea of shopping for someone who has everything to the next level with this hyperbole that truly leaves you thinking. While the first verse features Rucker observing the typical Christmas season with Santa and shopping, it turns quickly on the chorus and the result is astonishing. “What do you give someone, who gave his only son?” Darius asks, “What if we believed in him like he believes in us?”
Additionally, the video focuses on the idea of people loving people (thanks, Garth!), and we couldn’t agree with the sentiment. Whether you’re a religious person or not, “What God Wants for Christmas” encourages us all to be a little nicer and love a little harder. If that’s not the reason for the season, I don’t know what is.
