Album Review: @DariusRucker “Southern Style”

Darius Rucker southern style album

Well over a decade after performing hit songs “Hold My Hand” and “I Only Wanna Be With You” in the band Hootie and the Blowfish, Darius Rucker has developed a different sound over the years. He released his fourth solo album titled Southern Style on March 31st which peaked at No. 1 on the country airplay charts in April.

Southern Style is an ode to his hometown of Charleston, South Carolina. It is a compilation of songs about Love, The South and Charleston.

Here are a few of my favorite songs from Southern Style:

“Baby I’m Right” is a fantastic song that describes how women are always right in relationships and that men are always wrong until…they fall in love of course, and then he has it ALL right.

“This could be the start of something beautiful, this could be the start of something magical, the kind of thing you look for all your life, this could be the start of something so unreal, this could be finally the real deal, I guess now and then baby I’m right”

“You Can Have Charleston” absolutely put tears in my eyes. The song describes the relationship troubles of a married couple that suddenly become lost in a storm of lust. His wife falls in love with another man and he can’t get over the fact that he lost his one and only, so he professes to her that she can have Charleston too.

“You can have Charleston, I’ll pack up and leave, maybe find a spot on the west coast, give you lots of room to breathe, with your new life and your new love, I won’t get in your way, I’ll just wish you well and try like hell, to smile and walk away, from my home, my heart, where I was born and raised”

He felt that Charleston reminded him so much of her, that he would move across the country just to give her the space.

“My soul don’t want to go, but it’s got to be this way, It’s going to break my heart to say, goodbye but it’ll kill me if I stay, you can have Charleston”

Now if your looking for that go-to party anthem on this album you should check out “Good For A Good Time” it’s just AMAZING.

“I’m up for just about anything as long as it’s almost legal, I can fit in with my old crowd, long as there’s a party, they’re my kind of people, If you’re down for painting the town, I’ll be around all night, you know I’m always good for a good time”

You definitely won’t be wasting your money on any of Rucker’s albums as all of them are pretty sweet, but this one is a must buy! All of the songs including the first single “Homegrown Honey” are songs to be reckoned with and destined to be hits. I’d give this album a 9/10 stars.

When Rucker is not performing or touring the country, he spends most of his time here in Charleston, South Carolina. He recently gave an Iraq Veteran a new home mortgage free. If you didn’t love him before, you should now.
