Doobie Brothers

Country Music #CMchat was lucky enough to have the iconic, the legendary, the incomparable The Doobie Brothers join Jessica Northey for a Twitterview this week to discuss and celebrate the release of their new, Nashville-influenced album, Southbound. Southbound is a collection of duets with The Doobie Brothers, including some of Nashville’s most renowned artists.

However, before The Doobie Brothers headed southbound, they were a group that formed in California (forty-five years ago, to be exact). The group found their niche in the rock ‘n’ roll genre, creating some of the most recognizable tunes of the 1970’s and 1980’s. A gathering of men that has barely rested since the inception of their group, The Doobie Brothers teamed up with Sony Nashville earlier this year to announce the release of a greatest hits of their more than four decades of music-making, re-recorded to incorporate the lead and background vocals of country artists. Those country artists include: Sara Evans, Vince Gill, Hunter Hayes, Casey James, Toby Keith, Love and Theft, Jerrod Niemann, Brad Paisley, Blake Shelton, Tyler Farr, Chris Young, Charlie Worsham, and the Zac Brown Band. Also notably on the album is Michael McDonald, who returned to The Doobie Brothers for involvement with this particular project.

While we were well aware of the extensive career and catalog of The Doobie Brothers prior to our Twitterview with the classic rockers crossing over to dabble in a bit of country, we were ecstatic to hear their answers to our questions and dig a little deeper into the men that make up the epochal band that is responsible for just about every song you will hear on a classic rock radio station.

Did you know that The Doobie Brothers each have a favorite song of their own? We learned that Tom’s favorite is “Dark Eyed Cajun Woman;” Pat’s is “Long Train Runnin’;” and John’s is “Slack Key Soquel Rag.” The brothers Doobie also provided us with a pretty awesome graphic to share with us some things we might not have known about them before tonight’s chat (see the tweet in response to Jessica Northey’s Question 9 below). We also found out that Tom, Pat, and John think the best actors to play them in a movie would be the quite obvious choices: George Clooney, Brad Pitt, and Tom Cruise. We pity the brother who Cruise plays …

All jokes aside, the Country Music #CMchat Twitterview with these legends was absolutely amazing and we had a blast. In case you missed it, here is the tweet-by-tweet recap of the entire hour. Thanks to The Doobie Brothers for celebrating the release of Southbound with our community!
