I had the pleasure of meeting Omar Rodriguez, General Manager of Carl Black Chevrolet Orlando, on a plane in route to the Country Music Awards a couple years ago. We share a great mutual friend and I learned then how much Carl Black does to support country radio. When we returned to Florida, Omar mentioned they were hosting a concert there as part of a series called, “Carl Black Live on the Lot”. The band was called Florida Georgia Line. Who? My first thought was this Florida Georgia Line must be a UF [University of Florida] band. I bet they play frat boy songs to screaming gator fans. I thought they have to be an average local band at best.
Well, more than a thousand people showed up at Carl Black that day to see one of the very first live performances of what would be a game changing song. You know who wasn’t there? This girl.
Cruise just became the best selling country digital song of all time……ALL TIME. The mega hit just surpassed Lady Antebellum’s Need You Now, with an astounding 6.33 million downloads. It spent 24 consecutive weeks at #1. Tyler Hubbard and Brian Kelley, the funky frontmen behind the music, took home CMA Single of the Year Award and swept the ACAs with 6 total awards. To say this was this their year is an understatement and to publicly admit how painfully wrong I was might warrant the biggest award of all.
