Confession: My name is Kim and I love bro country. I hope to hear an array of “we love you Kims” but I am pretty sure that’s not going to happen. Bro country has gotten a bad rep.
Do I think females in this industry had an amazingly great year and deserved more recognition? No question. Do I long to connect to the vivid storytelling that is present more often in traditional country? Without a single doubt.
However contrary to the opinion of some music critics, I believe there is a place for bro country. Florida Georgia Line, Luke Bryan and Blake Shelton dominated the airwaves this year landing in the top spot of every single chart. There are a lot of haters but guess what? There is a bigger audience requesting these songs. They didn’t get to the top by accident. This past year was tough for the economy with endless stress about the healthcare system. Many jobs were lost, relationships broken and the year just seemed more of a challenge for many. Sometimes you just need an escape.
That escape was found in the music dominating 2013. When life hands you and extra dose of crazy sometimes you can’t deal with lyrics deeper than “chew tobacco, chew tobacco, chew tobacco spit”. Upbeat songs like Aw Naw, Cruise, and That’s My Kind Of Night (gasp) added a dose of fun and a much needed mental retreat. The lyrics aren’t especially deep but they are comical and a little relatable at times.
It’s that simple, or calculated, however you want to look at it. The artists are recording what the fans want to hear and this year that meant the fun lovin, beer drinkin, truck drivin, cruisin, shootin patron songs were it.
Tell me, what do you think?
