#CMchat Exclusive Interview with Haley Georgia

I’ve been a fan of Haley Georgia since the first time I heard her. When I walked into the Dusty Armadillo in Rootstown, OH, she was laughing with her band as they were doing sound check. She gave a wave and continued on — always giving props to her band. She’s the girl next door. She is someone who is completely herself all of the time. She wears a smile often and laughs as if no one is watching.

Her trailer was comfortable and spacious. She sat down across from me with a water bottle and an adorable over-sized coat. Haley Georgia was obviously not used to Ohio weather, but she made it clear how much she loved this place.

What’s your favorite song to perform live?

My favorite song to perform live would be “Jiffy Lube Love Song.” It’s one of the first ones we do in the show and I just feel like it’s a really good intro to the incoming snap shots of my life that we put out there during the live show.

What’s a song you close with? Is it different every time or is it the same song?

I always end on “Prom Night.” That’s the last thing I want people to remember. You know even if they walk away not remembering anything else but “Prom Night” I’m OK with it.

What advice would you give to your 17 year old self?

I would just say get ready you’re about to see your dreams come true. That’s kinda what has happened over these last three years. I’ve seen so many of my dreams come true. Like getting a publishing deal, getting a record deal, and getting to come out and play shows with so many amazing artists. Especially sharing the stage with people like Colt Ford and Chase Rice this year. There’s so many highlights from this year.

Who would you love to duet with?

Probably Tyler Hubbard from Florida Georgia Line. I would love to sing with him and I love Florida Georgia Line. I listen to their songs all day, every day, and the rhythm in his voice is amazing. I feel like I could learn a lot from him.

What is your favorite song to cover and what song would you like to cover?

“Hillbilly Bone” by Blake Shelton because it’s really unexpected and I think cover songs are a great way to make a connection with people. You can see people smile and it’s like you’re getting to know somebody through music. That’s what I feel like a live show is. This song makes people happy and they sing along which is fun. Crowds are the best sound in the world.

One that I want to cover is anything by Brooks & Dunn especially “Hillbilly Deluxe.” There’s something about hillbillies. Also “Ain’t Nothing Bout You.” That would be one we could add a lot of dynamics to and I’ve been talking to the band about it.

A lot of people have talked to me about being influenced by other genres and that’s why I love playing “Hillbilly Bone” because we stripped it down, so people don’t really know what we’re playing until we get into it. It’s a hip hop beat that Blake’s playing.

What’s a weird habit that you have?

I’m really weak when it comes to shutting an ibuprofen bottle. You know the screw on caps? I know it sounds crazy, but I’ll put it in my purse and I just won’t put the cap on right. Then it spills all over my purse. It happens to me at least 20 times a week. I cannot put on those tops! Same with a water bottle. I’ll be laying on the couch and the water bottle will be laying on my arm or something and then I go to get up and It’ll just spill all over me. I just can’t put the cap on right. I always think I put it on, but I never do and I never think to double check it. I have not improved at all, but I really need to work on it.

What’s something, if you weren’t in music, that you would be doing right now? What’s another dream you have?

I have no other dreams. Music is the only thing. I can’t think of one more thing that I would rather be doing than sitting in Ohio and playing a show. I don’t want to be doing anything else. I’ve had my drawers packed since I was 12, ready to hit the road.

What’s the coolest show you’ve ever played? Where and who with?

By far my favorite two nights have been when I got to go out and sing with other artists because there’s a different energy that happens when you go out and you’re singing a song people love. Like when I sang “Cruise” with Chase Rice. The crowd erupts with a song like that. It’s the feeling like when you work really hard and then you get to go out and experience it for like 2-3 minutes. And it’s so worth it…that was in Detroit. I’m a city girl and I love everywhere I go, but that was just amazing. We were at the Fillmore and it was just a beautiful place. The people were amazing, loud, and rowdy. That was the best time of my life.

Chase was great. I think my favorite thing was Chase has this clothing line called Head Down Eyes Up and all of his fans wear all the clothes from his line. It’s such an amazing thing to see how strong his fan base is because he’s so dedicated and he understands them so well. It’s the most important thing to stay as close as you possibly can to your fans. I really admire that in him.

Is there anything you would like to add or say?

Thank you to everyone for their support thus far! We have Country Thunder and Stagecoach coming up in 2016. It’s going to be awesome! And we have more music coming out. Be sure to check out my EP, which is available now.
