Could We Be Hearing a New Album from Johnny Cash?

What if I told you that we could all be hearing new music from Johnny Cash soon – very soon? Well it looks like that WILL be the case as it’s been reported by Associated Press that Cash’s estate will be releasing “Out Among the Stars”, an album the legendary country singer recorded between 1981 and 1984 and has never been heard before. The 12 song album includes two duets with June Carter Cash and on with Waylon Jennings and instrumental backings by Hargus “Pig” Robbins and Marty Stuart.

So, why was the album never released? It’s said that during the time period that these songs were recorded, it was a low time for Cash in terms of his popularity. He was paired up by Columbia Records to record the album with producer Billy Sherrill (president of CBS Records Nashville) in an effort to re-invent him.

“Dad was always uniquely himself,” son John Carter Cash said. He never modified himself. But Nashville at the time was in a completely different place. It was the `Urban Cowboy’ phase. It was pop country, and dad was not that. I think him working with Billy was sort of an effort by the record company to put him more in the circle of Music Row and see what could happen at the heart of that machine.”

Columbia Records apparently wasn’t too fond of the recordings and therefore, never released the album. John Carter Cash and Legacy Recordings found the original tapes that Johnny Cash kept for himself last year. Columbia may not have liked the tunes, but Cash’s son did.

“We were so excited when we discovered this,” Cash said. “We were like, my goodness this is a beautiful record that nobody has ever heard. Johnny Cash is in the very prime of his voice for his lifetime. He’s pitch perfect. It’s seldom where there’s more than one vocal take. They’re a live take and they’re perfect.”

You can expect to hear this album when it is set to drop on March 25, 2014!
