Oops! Bob Dylan has been charged with “public insult and inciting hate” and is currently under investigation due to remarks he made in an interview with Rolling Stone over a year ago. Charges are coming from a Croatian group called Council of Croats in France.
In the interview, Dylan was talking about how racism was still alive and well in America saying, “Blacks know that some whites didn’t want to give up slavery – that if they had their way, they would still be under the yoke, and they can’t pretend they don’t know that. If you got a slave master or (a Ku Klux) Klan (member) in your blood, blacks can sense that. That stuff lingers to this day. Just like Jews can sense Nazi blood and the Serbs can sense Croatian blood.”
This didn’t sit well with the Croatian group who said, “We have nothing against Rolling Stone magazine or Bob Dylan as a singer, [But] you cannot equate Croatian [war] criminals with all Croats.”
The group is not looking for money or looking to knock Dylan down, but only wanting an apology due to the fact that they feel his comments made during the interview amounted to stirring up racial hatred against Croats.
I’m sure Dylan meant no harm, but according to Fox News, (harm or not) France has strict laws punishing hate speech and racist remarks.
Representatives from Dylan had no immediate comment.
