There are some things that just don’t seem to make any sense together. Salt and caramel. Felix and Oscar. Chicken and waffles. Jerrod Niemann and Pitbull. Yet, despite the odds clearly stacked against them, they form a surprisingly symbiotic relationship. Yes, even Jerrod and Pitbull.
I know, I know…I’m as shocked as you are. I had every intention of hating the remix of Jerrod Niemann’s #1 hit “Drink to That All Night.” I was prepared to shudder when Mr. Worldwide joined in and added his patented rap to the mix, but for some reason, I didn’t. Because, in an oddly perfect way, the song works. It works in it’s original inception and it still works as a remix.
While the original song already pushed the boundaries of country with its up-tempo beat and hints of auto-tune, it managed to hit #1 on the ever-changing and somewhat turbulent country radio landscape. While the original version works in its own right, the remix works because it’s simply and unabashedly a party song. Forget defining it as country, don’t define it as EDM or pop or hip hop. It’s a song about drinking all night, and while country purists will be quick to write Niemann off with this cut, it’s actually brilliant. He’s following in the very successful crossover footsteps of Florida Georgia Line and Nelly by releasing a song that is sure to be thumping on summer playlists across the country from Nashville to Napa to New Jersey.
“It’s so exciting. Pitbull is just awesome!” said Jerrod in a statement. “Whenever you have two genres of music come together, that kind of fusion is just fun to me, not just because of what comes of it musically, but also in terms of introducing listeners to different styles and songs that they might never have heard otherwise.”
Say what you want about country music no longer being so county and I’d be hard-pressed to disagree with you. I love Brandy Clark, Ashley Monroe and the more traditional acts, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t a place for everyone. The “Drink to That All Night” remix is an unapologetic party song and as much as I don’t want to admit it, I like it…and I like it a lot. I’ll drink to that…all night.
