During the 2016 CMA Fest in Nashville, I had the opportunity to catch up with Epic Records recording artist, Jessie James Decker. For those who don’t know, she is an NFL wife to Eric Decker, a mom of two young kids, a clothing designer, and a singer/songwriter who rarely seems to slow down. Last fall, this multitasking extraordinaire gave #CMchat the scoop on what it’s like to be a working mom, and how she manages everything in her busy schedule. This time, I wanted to dig deeper and find out what her keys to success are, as well as what she is working on in the coming months.
Between music, being a clothing designer, having your own reality show, and a thriving marriage, you have had your share of successes in life so far. What is a key to success for you?
“Confidence is everything. It’s about the energy and vibes you put out there. For example, if I walked in here and I said, ‘you guys, I look so gross,’ etc. you’d start to think maybe I’m right, and immediately start looking for flaws. Whereas if I walked in and I said, ‘wow I slept so good, I feel so refreshed,’ etc. you would be more drawn to the positivity and think ‘she really does look great!’ It’s all about what you put out there. Don’t put out negative vibes because people will catch on and start to believe them and so will you.”
In addition to being a singer, you’re also a songwriter. What’s your favorite song you’ve written?
“There’s a couple, actually, but one is called “What am I Here For.” It is my most honest, vulnerable song about a terrible relationship I was in for three years. The song basically posed the questions of ‘what am I even here for if you treat me like crap, like you don’t even want me around? Why did you pick me to do these things to if you don’t care?’ So after it had ended, I wrote this song, sent it to him, said no words, because all that needed to be said was in that song. It was like I had already spoken my peace, and I hope it gets to be on a record one day.”
So many women look up to you for everything from fashion, makeup and hair advice, to watching you as a wife and mom, and right down to your entrepreneurial spirit. What Inspires you?
“I’m such a girl’s girl. Strong, confident women inspire me, especially my mom. She has such a good attitude about life, and she is such a great mother. She pushes me every day to be a good mom. I always think, ‘what would my mom do in this situation’ and that’s how I make the majority of my decisions.”
Let’s be random for a minute. Finish this sentence: I have always wanted to…
“I have always wanted to have my own talk show! Kind of like a Kelly and Michael morning show – but think Eric and Jessie talk show. I like working with Eric and I think it would be fun to do something like that together. We can talk about love, give advice, and help others.”
You’ve been hinting at new music coming soon. Is that still happening, and what else is ahead in the coming months?
“I have more clothes coming out in my Kittenish line, as well as a new hair perfume, and I’m recording next week in the studio. Very busy, lots to come!”
It’s clear that with hard work and the support of her family, Jessie James Decker is determined to continue striving for success in all aspects of her life. At #CMchat, we couldn’t be more excited to be along for the ride. You can purchase Jessie James Decker’s current single, “Lights Down Low” on iTunes, which will additionally be available for request at country radio in the near future. Until then, make sure to keep up with her on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook.
