[email protected] Releases “Home to Me” in Support of Public Housing (Listen!)

Known for her unique voice and rags-to-riches story, country-folk singer Jewel is using her talent to raise awareness for a cause close to heart. She’s released “Home to Me,” in support of ReThink‘s public housing initiative. The track is available as a free download, and was inspired by an online contest that received hundreds of submissions.

To support the initiative, Jewel performed the new song to a small crowd of public housing administrators and residents at The Mint Nightclub in Los Angeles. “I love that it’s a public awareness campaign,” she said in an interview with the Associated Press prior to the performance. “We’re not asking people for money. We’re asking them to rethink.”

The singer-songwriter was once homeless and lived in her car, turning to music in her darkest times. “I always crowd-source song inspiration,” she said. “It’s really about what I see around me.” The title of “Home to Me” was chosen from an essay entered into a contest held by ReThink. “It’s surreal,” said Silvia Kearney of Ohio, who wrote the essay called “Home to Me” and sat with her son and daughter in the audience for Jewel’s performance. “It’s unbelievable to inspire someone like her, so famous and so talented.”

In addition, Jewel is working on a new album, that she hopes to release independently next fall. She’s already written 30 songs for that album, which she describes as similar in style to her debut Pieces of You. She hopes to release the album in conjunction with a memoir/ self-help book.

And don’t expect Jewel to shy away from touchy subjects, like her impending divorce from Ty Murray. “My writing has always reflected my life,” she said to the AP. “It’s such a heartbreak, but at the same time I feel really lucky that I have a friend going through this with me. We’re focusing on our strengths: Being really great parents and good friends.”
