Just over a month after the live televised Peter Pan event, it seems as though “grease” is already the word. The next stage show adapted to film to be adapted to stage again, only this time in front of millions of television viewers, is the musical classic Grease.
The role of Sandy, made famous by Olivia Newton John, will be reprised by Dancing with the Stars champion, television dance competition judge, movie star, and Academy of Country Music Awards Top New Female Vocalist and Top New Artist, Julianne Hough. The casting choice for Sandy couldn’t be more perfect, as they simply don’t get more talented, gorgeously fresh-faced, and well-rounded than Hough. In speaking about being chosen for the role, she explained:
“Grease” is one of the movies that made me want to be an entertainer, and I have literally been waiting my whole life to play Sandy. My siblings and I watched it and played it out over and over when we were kids. This is my dream role and performing it live on television will be one of the most thrilling opportunities I’ve had in my career so far.
So far, joining Hough in the cast is Disney’s High School Musical star Vanessa Hudgens, who will play Rizzo, a role made famous by Stockard Channing. GREASE: LIVE (which is a working title) will be executive-produced by acclaimed film, television, and theater producer Marc Platt.
The production is currently set to air on Sunday, January 31st, from 7:00pm – 10:00pm (ET live/PT tape-delayed) on FOX. Just the thought of this gives me chills…and they’re multiplying.
