Little Big Town has already had a massive summer hit with “Pontoon.” Not a group to rest on their laurels, the group has attempted the seemingly impossible: to out-do their ginormous career-altering anthem with another epic summer jam.
While to some, that task may seem futile, I dare you to give a listen to their new single “Day Drinking” and not be hooked. With Karen Fairchild taking lead on the ode to imbibing in the daylight, the tune is catchy, fun and possibly even more buoyant than “Pontoon.”
Band member Jimi Westbrook says, “It makes me think about those summer days when all that’s on the agenda is hanging out, relaxing, and having a good time with friends. So, if that’s your plan, here’s your song! ‘Why don’t we do a little day drinking?’”
The tune was co-written by Westbrook, Fairchild and band member Phillip Sweet, along with Barry Dean and Troy Verges. It celebrates all the things that make summer great, including patios, umbrellas, sunshine and sipping on something sweet alongside those other three things. There’s no need to wait for nighttime with Little Big Town, as they declare, “Don’t want to wait til the sun’s sinking/ We could be feeling all right/ I know you know what I’m thinking/ Why don’t we do a little day drinking?”
While this song may be thematically somewhat similar to what’s hot in country music right now, this song is far from a copycat. In fact, it’s a smartly produced track with great instrumentation, polished harmonies and a catchy whistle that ties the whole song together. The thumping drums and twangy guitars and used tastefully, inflating the track rather than distracting from it. Overall, the music is airy, the whistle ear-wormy and the vocals pristine, allowing the catchy lyrics and melody to shine for themselves.
I invite you to grab an icy drink with an umbrella and partake in some “Day Drinking” alongside Little Big Town (and me) this summer.
