Following a CMA nomination for Duo of the Year and the success of songs such as “Angel Eyes” and “Night That You’ll Never Forget,” Eric Gunderson and Stephen Barker Liles, collectively Love and Theft, are releasing their next radio single. A track that will bring the country music audience a Love and Theft that it hasn’t seen thus far, “Whiskey on My Breath” is available on iTunes Monday, November 24th, and will serve as the leadoff single from their third album (of the same title), due out on February 10th.
In discussing “Whiskey on My Breath,” Liles, a co-writer on the song, explained:
It shows a different side of us and paves the way for what our new album is going to be like. With lyrics like “I ain’t afraid of dyin’, but what scares me to death is meeting Jesus with whiskey on my breath,” it’s a song with depth that touches below the surface. It’s like the songs that made me fall in love with country music.
Liles’ statement couldn’t be more accurate, as “Whiskey on My Breath” is startlingly different from Love and Theft releases of the past, but the most sensational form of different there ever was. Stripping themselves down and opening up to their fans and the country music industry, the new offering is slow, steady, and sentimental, exploring one’s own demons. The song is a musical delivery of repentance, recognizing the need to make amends and change one’s ways before coming face-to-face with Jesus.
Aside from the breathtaking vocals and impeccable harmonies, what stands out most in this song is the message of self-awareness and ability to look in the mirror and see your own flaws without punishing yourself for the downfalls. What makes the meaning of the song so beautiful is the realization that having faults doesn’t make you a bad person and that Heaven is still waiting; but while you’re here on Earth, there are fixes that can be made to ensure a life of which you can be proud.
“Whiskey on My Breath” is now available for pre-order, and you can hear a live version of the track below, performed by Liles and co-writer Tyler Reeve. Let us know what you think of this Love and Theft song by leaving a comment here.
