Mickey Guyton, Self-Titled EP Review
Over the past few years, there has been a tendency to talk about what is wrong with the music business these days – too much repetition, too many artists sounding like each other, etc, etc. But, if you look – and listen – closely, you will find that there are many talented artists that are starting to make a name for themselves who deserve a chance to be heard.
“Texas native Mickey Guyton is one of those artists.”
With her debut single, “Better Than You Left Me,” having made a steady impact at Country Radio since its’ release this winter, her name has been mentioned as one of the top newcomers of the year. In a column I wrote for Billboard, I called her “the best female singer to come along since Carrie Underwood.” I stand by that statement. The single clearly defines the term “Power Ballad,” as Guyton handles the song with the confidence of a singer who has been around for decades. When you hear her sing, it’s almost like going to school.
The same could be said of the remainder of her first EP, a collection of songs that showcase her vivacious personality and range. “Somebody Else Will” has a natural flow and sass to it, which could very well find itself on the radio soon – and “Pretty Little Mustang” would very much be a welcome sound coming out of the speakers while driving down the highway this summer.
But, all of this notwithstanding, the jewel of the album is the heart-pounding “Why Baby Why,” where she hits all the right notes at all the right times. This is what you call a “star making moment,” and she takes full advantage of every line, every ounce of heartbreak and anguish. Simply put, if Mickey Guyton isn’t a star, we all need to go home!
Over the past week, there has been much discussion about “lettuce” and “tomatoes” in the Country format. While those descriptions are kind of asinine in my book, I will say that there is no way that Mickey Guyton qualifies as any part of the salad. With talent and poise like hers – in great abundance – she is the main course. So….do us all a favor, and go to iTunes and download this album…..NOW! You will thank me later!
