New Music: Johnny Cash “Out Among the Stars” Available for Pre-Order

I remember it like it was yesterday. I was 10 years old and my sweet Nana asked me to join her for a night out. That evening took me to the Arizona Fairgrounds, sitting 5 rows back center, to view one of the most influential singers of all time.  On October 24, 1982 I was witness to something special as the great Johnny Cash took the stage.

Who knew that about that time, in the early 1980s, there would be an album he recorded that was never released. Johnny kept the album and after combing through an infinite supply of archives and memories, his son Johnny Carter Cash, found it just last year. The younger Cash says that his parents threw nothing away. He told the Associated Press, “The had an archive that had everything in it from the original audio tapes from the Johnny Cash Show to random things like a camel saddle, a gift from the prince of Saudi Arabia”.

When Cash found this lost album he knew he struck gold. He said “Its a beautiful record that nobody has ever heard”. He went on to say his fathers voice was “pitch perfect” as it was recorded when he was in his prime. “Out Among the Stars” features a duet with Waylon Jennings and June Carter. They have never even been released as a demo…no one has heard them.

At the time country music was beginning to shift to a pop/country feel that we have today. Columbia didn’t feel it was worth releasing and didn’t retain the rights to this album. Johnny Carter Cash states this of his iconic father, “Dad was always uniquely himself”. No truer words were spoken. Johnny Cash felt the world would come around eventually. He’s right. Theres room for both and there are plenty of people excited to hear “Out Among the Stars” when its released in March 2014.
