Life was never boring for the 4 member band from North Carolina known as Parmalee. Their journey has been a series of interesting, sometimes crazy, events that led them to Nashville. Parmalee, consisting of brothers Matt Thomas and Scott Thomas, along with their cousin Barry Knox and Josh McSwain, who is a best friend since childhood officially formed in 2001 and began rehearsing in a barn. Road life took a toll on them personally and quite literally at times as they went through 3 trailers, 5 vans, an RV and were even held up at gunpoint after a show in 2010. According to Matt Thomas, they “borrowed money from their mamas and lived on peanuts”.
After landing a publishing deal the band found themselves in LA recording new music. Producer Steve Bruno, called in an old friend to help the guys and before you know it Nikki Sixx enters the studio. The Motley Crue bassist collaborated with Parmalee on several tracks both lyrically and on the production side. He ultimately ended up steering their songwriting in a different direction.
Well, after decade all that work and life experience is paying off for these guys. “Carolina” has spent 48 weeks on the Country Airplay Charts and peaked at #1. Their album, Feels Like Carolina, has received nothing but positive reviews since its release. There is a reason this band was named a #CMchat ONE TO WATCH in 2014. No one could have guessed that their road to Nashville would involve a vital stop with an 80s metal bassist but hey, life is pretty unpredictable.
AND I love this song and video!
