#BreakingTheIce with Post Monroe

Ashlee Hewitt, Whitney Duncan and Shelby McLeod make up the country music wildfire trio Post Monroe. Their passion for songwriting makes each song they sing authentic. Hewitt is from Minnesota, Duncan is a Tennessee native and McLeod hails from Georgia. Each member has their own style and story, yet they combine harmonies and influences that drive them together. Their self-titled debut EP was released for digital download on May 13th. Between their vocal abilities and fiery passion, Post Monroe will certainly soar.

Where you answering these questions from and what are you wearing?

Ashlee: Sitting on the back patio of my house with my husband, drinking a La Croix, enjoying this sunny Nashville day. Just got home from working out so I am wearing a purple tank top and my workout pants.

Shelby: From my kitchen. Just got in from laying by the pool on our day off, so I’ll spare y’all the swimsuit selfie.

Whitney: From my back porch, chilling in my lawn chair with my dog, Duke, and my husband. He’s about to grill.

What’s your official title and favorite thing about what you do?

Ashlee: I love writing. Performing too, but songwriting is where I get to be creative and being creative is my favorite thing to do.

Shelby: Connecting with people. Whether it’s on the music business side of things or fans loving your music, having that connection with someone by doing something you love is really special.

Whitney: I love writing and performing. Having an impact on someone’s life and emotions with a song is amazing.

What are three things you CANNOT live without?

Ashlee: My son who is about to be four in July, my husband and my Faith.

Shelby: My faith, my family, and Sephora.

Whitney: My relationship with God, my family, and Duke (my dog).

What’s the first thing you do when you wake up in the morning?

Ashlee: Drink my coffee on the patio with my husband.

Shelby: I always have my ‘minute’ of quiet time. I’ll have my cup of coffee (or 3) and call my sister and have our morning chat. Then I’m off to Orange Theory to workout.

Whitney: Take Duke outside, feed Duke, make my husband’s lunch and drink some hot lemon water before I go work out.

What’s your favorite cartoon character?

Ashlee: Mickey Mouse has always been my son’s favorite, so when I’m traveling and see anything Mickey it reminds me of him and I love that. I’d have to say Mickey!

Shelby: Do the little Rugrats count? Whatever happened to that show? I feel old now.

Whitney: Probably Bugs Bunny, that’s who I grew up with.

What’s the hardest life lesson you’ve learned?

Ashlee: Realizing how fragile life is.

Shelby: To always trust your gut. If you have a feeling about something, don’t second guess it.

Whitney: Life is short. Don’t take anything for granted. Your whole life can change in a second. And tell the people you love how you feel.

Do you find it harder in today’s music industry to be a female artist?

Ashlee: Yes and no. I feel like everything happens for a reason. The industry has changed a lot recently. There are always going to be situations that are harder for a woman to overcome but I think if the music is undeniable, gender doesn’t matter.

Shelby: I think women might have more boxes to check in the music industry. Talent is important, but so is being approachable to female fans. I don’t think that’s necessarily something guys have to think about.

Whitney: I think being a female in life is harder in general (no offense, guys. haha) Yes, I do think we have more obstacles to overcome, but like Ash said, “If the music is undeniable, gender doesn’t matter.”

Favorite hangout spot in Music City?

Ashlee: We always tend to end up at Losers.

Shelby: Acme, South and Losers.

Whitney: My house! (laughs)

What’s your favorite country singer from the 90s?

Ashlee: Can I pick more than one? I love 90s country. Patty Loveless, Shania Twain, Blackhawk and Diamond Rio.

Shelby: BIG Shania fan, Jo Dee Messina, Patty Loveless, Faith Hill, and Brooks & Dunn.

Whitney: Shania! Blackhawk, Patty Loveless, Travis Tritt, Dwight Yoakam, and Clay Walker.

If you could duet with any male artist who would you pick and why?

Ashlee: I got the honor to sing background vocals for Vince Gill and one of the songs we did was “Go Rest High” which had always been a dream of mine to sing with him. I had always loved that song but recently found out that one of the people it was written about happens to be my father-in-law, Keith Whitley. That made it even more special. Would be fun to sing an actual duet with Vince, but my other choice would be George Strait.

Shelby: Blake Shelton would be amazing! I’ve always loved him.

Whitney: I’ve always loved Billy Currington’s voice. Also a big fan of Thomas Rhett’s voice too. And of course, Chris Stapleton and Eric Church!

Do you have a favorite place to perform?

Ashlee: Definitely the Grand Ole Opry House and The Ryman.

Shelby: I’ve never performed at either, but the Grand Ole Opry and The Ryman sound pretty good to me!

Whitney: I vote for the Ryman and Opry House also!

What’s one gift you will never forget?

Ashlee: My first guitar for sure! I was 9.

Shelby: My Hummingbird guitar I just got it for my birthday from my parents as my first big girl guitar. My Dad told me to remember that guitar when I pick out his nursing home. (laughs) Needless to say it’s very special to me!

Whitney: My Fender Strat, ’72 Lake Placid Blue. It’s beautiful.

What current event has your eyes and ears? What are you doing about it?

Ashlee: Well a lot of my siblings were adopted, so I have always had a heart for orphans. A few years ago I did a concert that was able to raise enough money to build a school for an orphanage and women’s shelter called Ruuska Village in Haiti. It was an amazing and eye opening experience to go see it finished last year. I will continue to support them as much as I can along with other ways I can help people in need on a daily basis.

Shelby: I was heavily involved in Georgia 4-H growing up. I’d love to eventually work with them at some point to give back and encourage kids that were in my shoes to pursue their dreams.

Whitney: My cousin was Holly Bobo. So I have a special place in my heart for families of missing people. Having gone through such a difficult tragedy with my family, I would love to eventually help others.

Do you have a favorite place to shop? What inspires your fashion style?

Ashlee: I love Free People. I’m kind of a hippie at heart. I also like being comfortable. So anything that can accomplish being fashionable and comfortable at the same time draws me in.

Shelby: I shop anywhere and everywhere. Free People, Nordstrom, Urban Outfitters, Blush — I love it all! I’m kind of all over the map when it comes to my style, although I typically lean towards the more glitzy pieces. I love anything that’s sparkly and has fringe.

Whitney: Free People! I love leather, fringe, lace…kinda edgy and kinda feminine. I love a good t-shirt and pair of jeans.

What’s one super power you wish you had?

Ashlee: (laughs) Me and the girls have been talking about this. Definitely to eat whatever we want and not gain weight. We have our week moments on the road for sure.

Shelby: Yeah, Ash took the words out of my mouth here. Definitely would love to indulge in the fattening things on earth and still be able to fit in my skinny jeans.

Whitney: I’m with Ash and Shelby on this one!

Besides making music, what’s your favorite thing to do together?

Ashlee: I think we all enjoy fitness so when we can, working out together is fun! Weather it being in a hotel gym or hiking. We are also all obsessed with the Bachelorette.

Shelby: I try to do something every day. Usually it’s Orange Theory in the AM, and a walk/yoga/Percy Warner Hike in the afternoon.

Whitney: Yeah, love working out together!

Name one artist of any genre besides country that you are a fan of and tell us why?

Ashlee: Brandy Carlile has always been a fave.

Shelby: Justin Bieber. I’ve got the fever! Seriously. I have no shame in my game. I actually listen to pop a lot.

Whitney: Adele, Bonnie Raitt, The Wallflowers, X Ambassadors, and Vance Joy.

What makes you laugh out loud?

Ashlee: It seems like Shelby does a good job of that constantly. Whenever we are all together we laugh a lot which is something really good to have!

Shelby: Snapchat. All day, every day. Oh and Friends. One of my all-time favorite shows.

Whitney: Just hanging out with Ash and Shelby…seems like there is always something funny happening.

Fill in the blank: It’s not a party until…

Ashlee: …someone spills a drink or gets hurt seems to be the way it usually goes.

Shelby: …I start dancing like I can, and then get sentimental and tell someone (usually Whitney and Ashlee) how much I love them. Happens more often than not.

Whitney: …Post Monroe shows up. (laughs)

Fill in the blank: Country Music has made us…

Ashlee: …who we are

Shelby: What Ash said!

Whitney: What Ash said times two.
