“Payback,” the second single off Rascal Flatts’ latest album Rewind, has been out for some time, peaking at Number 22 on the US Country Airplay chart. The song, which we previously reviewed here on Country Music #CMchat, is one of the trio’s more frisky tunes to date, insinuating that the best way to get over someone is, well, to get under someone else.
Rather than putting the lyrical story to film, the guys of Rascal Flatts decided to make the official video one from a live performance. But not just from any old live performance; from #ChevyCMA at LP Field in Nashville, Tennessee. The very stadium our country cadre stood in while “Payback” was being delivered, never realizing we were becoming a part of history.
While you can’t see us (well, maybe you can … we are those wee little dots in the crowd), we clearly remember this night and the performance of Rascal Flatts’ brand new single (at the time) and recall the positive and rowdy reception received by the crowd. In fact, I’m willing to go out on a limb and say this was the best venue to have filmed this video in, as the crowd was in excess of 40,000 and the excitement could be felt from front to back, top to bottom. That excitement is resonated perfectly in the music video, as the audience is dancing, raising their arms (and drinks), and clad with smiles from ear to ear. Also translating well to the video is the outstanding lighting display that was able to be appreciated from all locations of the tremendous stadium.
Perhaps we didn’t get a short cinematic production with this particular video from Rascal Flatts, but if they were going to bring a live performance to the masses in lieu of a typical music video, they made the right selection. And, hey. It will always be something that Country Music #CMchat can look back at and say “we were there when this piece of history was captured!”
