Skylar Laine is a Mississippi-born country singer who achieved notoriety when she was a Top 5 finisher on Season 11 of Fox’s acclaimed show American Idol. However, it wasn’t on the Idol stage where Skylar’s pursuit of a dream began.
Before she could speak, she sang. In fact, if Skylar couldn’t figure out how to pronounce a word when she was learning to talk, she would turn it into a song. Everywhere the family went, Skylar was constantly entertaining, bursting into tunes in the backseat of the car. It was her grandmother who recognized that the little girl had talent and she convinced Skylar’s mom to explore it a bit.
Skylar found herself in singing lessons, participating in competitions, and auditioning for shows. At the age of six, she landed her first musical, The Wizard of Oz, where she played the role of Toto the dog. Through this experience, Skylar caught the acting bug and she and her mother decided to take her musical career a step further – or leaps and bounds further. When Skylar was seven, the two headed to New York City so she could audition for the Broadway production of Annie. Skylar soon found herself playing the role of Molly, a young orphan who seeks mentorship from the lead.
During her time in Annie, Skylar auditioned for Les Miserables and won the roles of young Cosette and young Eponine, solidifying a two-year job with the popular show and traveling across the United States and around the world. While she loved every moment of the adventure, Skylar had already decided that country music was her ultimate goal and she needed to revamp her plan to figure out a way to reach it.
Over the next many years, Skylar worked tirelessly at honing her craft while attending school in her hometown. With the insatiable itch to get out of Mississippi and move to Nashville, Tennessee as soon as possible, she decided to expedite her high school years, taking online classes and earning enough credits to graduate early.
Along with her dream to move to Nashville was a dream to audition for a little show called American Idol. Though circumstances prevented Skylar from trying out when she became eligible, she took the plunge the very first chance she had. After a successful Houston audition, the path was paved for Skylar’s American Idol journey – one that took her all the way to the Top 5 of her cast.
Today, Skylar lives in Nashville with her fiance and plays shows frequently. She has written with some of her dream songwriters, including Hillary Lindsay, Luke Laird, Jeremy Stover, Chris DeStefano, Anne Preven, and Chris Thompkins, and is on the brink of releasing an album (which Skylar anticipates the record will be out before summer).
Skylar Laine is an absolute must-hear vocalist with extraordinary talent, personality, and passion. With a background like hers and a catalog of writers who are lined up to work with her, there is no doubt that this artist’s album will be one that country music fans everywhere will be eager to add to their collections.
We are so excited to see what Skylar has in store, but one thing we know for sure is it is well worth the wait!
