Just one month after Country Music #CMchat Creator/Founder Jessica Northey discovered one of her new favorite artists, the same artist’s name started being shouted from the rooftops by the industry. Call it good timing; call it intuition; call it a matter of good ole fashion clairvoyance, but Jessica was on to something at the time this independent artist came into her life.
Sturgill Simpson is the name to which I refer. His album Metamodern Sounds in Country Music has received accolades across the music industry, placing him on the top of many year-end lists, including our own Best of Country Music Albums 2014 collection. Atlantic Records heard the cries and kept their eyes on Simpson, finding the next signee to the prestigious record label.
News broke today, through confirmation made by Atlantic Records representatives to Rolling Stone Country, that Simpson had, indeed, been signed by the label. Also verifying what many had believed to be true for several weeks, Simpson made the following entry to his Facebook page early yesterday:
Simpson’s plans for 2015 include spending time on the road, playing festivals (including Coachella, Stagecoach, and Bonnaroo), as well as opening for the Avett Brothers at Red Rocks Amphitheater in Colorado over the summer. He is also back in the studio with his producer Dave Cobb, working on a new album.
I can safely bet that a certain person named Jessica Northey is jumping up and down over the fact that Simpson has new music on the horizon, and I have a feeling that many will be joining her in the excitement once he continues to spread like wildfire.
