[email protected] Officially Announce Split

Joy Williams and John Paul White, collectively known as The Civil Wars, were taking the country music industry by storm when they suddenly canceled tour dates in 2012. While the duo released an album post-split and the album catapulted all the way to Number 1, also affording Williams and White a Grammy, the two continued traveling down separate paths, having not communicated with one another since the unexpected parting of ways.

After a couple of years on hiatus, as well as speculation by country music enthusiasts and The Civil Wars fans that the Grammy-winning duo would not be coming back together in unity and harmony, the pair officially announced their split on August 5th. On the confirmation of their breakup, Williams stated:

I am saddened and disappointed by the ending of this duo, to say the very least. JP is a tremendous musician, and I will always be grateful for the music we were able to create together. I sincerely hope that ‘You Are My Sunshine’ will be accepted as a token of my gratitude for every single person that has supported our duo throughout the years. I’m so thankful and my heart is full. Looking ahead, I’m excited to share the music that I am writing and recording in the midst of this difficult transition. I’ve loved being back in the studio, and have missed performing live. I look forward to seeing you soon.

White also came forward, providing:

I would like to express sincere thanks to all who were a part of the arc of the Civil Wars — from the beginning, to the end, and all points in between. My deep appreciation goes out to all who supported, disseminated, and enjoyed the music. Whatever shape or form the next chapter takes, thanks for being a large part of this one.

To honor fans and bid farewell to those who have supported The Civil Wars, the former duo is offering a free download of its rendition of “You Are My Sunshine.” The track was not previously released digitally, despite its 2011 release as the B-side to the Barton Hollow vinyl.

We wish Joy Williams and John Paul White the best of luck in their individual endeavors and look forward to hearing music from each of them in the near future.
