My husband lost his sweet daughter at the age of 5 to a brain stem glioma. She was diagnosed at 4 years old and the cancer progressed rather quickly. She was loving, vivacious, and his heart. You can’t imagine what this does to a family unless you live through it at some level. We were scared for our girls to turn 5…is that the magic number? Was that seizure Kaylee had as a baby the start of a tumor? Are Mikenna’s behavior problems related? (kidding…kinda) The fears are endless. Cancer impacts good families…good kids. It is so encouraging to me when people step up and donate time and money to pediatric cancer causes. Country music superstar Toby Keith stepped up in a big way.
Toby Keith is best known for his songs about having fun and drinking beer all with a side of love. He has sold out stadiums all over the country to fans singing every single word of his catalog of #1 songs. However, in November Keith did something really special. After developing the Toby Keith Foundation to assist kids with cancer they realized there were greater needs. Just last week Keith and his foundation saw years of planning unfold as the OK Kids Korral celebrated their grand opening in Oklahoma.
OK Kids Korral is a safe place that families and children dealing with cancer can come to relax and play. There are both daytime activities and 12 overnight suites for families that traveled long distances for medical care. The OK Corral features a movie theatre, garden, indoor playroom, game room, outdoor playground and a gourmet kitchen, Toby Keith describes his new project as the “Ritz Carlton meets Disney World”. In addition to all the state of the art amenities there is a resource room for families to get additional information on the disease process, a relaxation room and a neutropenic room for children with compromised immune systems. The goal of the OK Kids Corral is to provide a safe, convenient and hopeful place for families and children to visit.
I am not sure Toby Keith or the foundation employees will ever know what this truly means to the children and families they serve. Having a place to go where people understand your fears and where kids can know they are not fighting alone is a gift that cannot be put into words.
