Although the title “A Guy Walks Into a Bar,” might lead you to believe that Tyler Farr’s new single is some kind of joke, it’s far from it. The single, released today, is the first release from Farr’s forthcoming sophomore album, due out later this year. If the song is any indication, listeners are in for a treat, as the single is the perfect combination of what Farr fans have grown to love mixed with a new depth and maturity.
While “Redneck Crazy” and “Whiskey In My Water” were #1 hits that introduced Farr to the country music landscape as a force to be reckoned with, “A Guy Walks Into a Bar” firmly solidifies his status as a future superstar. The song, written by Brad Tursi and Jonathan Singleton, tells the full circle tale of a guy who walks into a bar, falls in love, loses that love and walks back into a bar. It’s Farr’s gritty emotional delivery that elevates the song to a level few male country singers out today could achieve.
The song opens with the strum of a somber guitar, Farr’s voice equally solemn as he sets up the storyline, playing on the song’s title, “The joke’s on me, but ain’t funny, everybody but me could see the punchline coming, a mile away…” As the song continues, we learn the whole sordid story.
On the chorus, Farr tells the story of love found and love lost. “A guy walks into a bar, orders a drink/ Sees a girl that catches his eye/ Asks her if she wants another/ They fall for each other and end up lovers / They laugh, cry, hold on tight, make it work for a little while /Then one night her taillights fade out into the dark/ And a guy walks into a bar…”
The song continues to build throughout, gaining instruments, tempo and passion in Farr’s voice. By the end, it echoes the heartbreak of a man who both found and lost great love. The song is sure to resonate with country listeners and gain Farr new fans who weren’t yet sold on his talent. Much like Florida Georgia Line’s “Dirt,” “A Guy Walks Into a Bar” shows growth, maturity and hopefully, a farewell to the fad that was “bro country.”
