During a recent United Way ninetieth birthday celebration in Dallas, Texas, former NBC’s The Voice coach, Usher, decided to honor the winningest coach in show history, country music’s main man, Blake Shelton.
Surprising the audience, Usher lent his smooth, incomparable R&B vocals to Blake’s Number 1 hit song, “Neon Light.” Performing the first verse and chorus slowly and methodically, Usher danced all over his vocal range, changing the track from a twangy tune about finding the bright side of darkness to a ballad of resilience. Incorporating his own echo effects on the chorus, “Neon Light” takes on a whole new life, sounding as if it is a song that has never been sung before.
Before the night was over, Usher also teamed up with Blake, again conquering a country song, but this time doing so as a duet. The two joined forces and performed Blake’s hit song “Home.” Taking the place of Michael Buble, in the previous duet version of the song, Usher transformed from R&B singer to classic and country crooner, seamlessly filling the shoes of Buble and adequately participating in the arrangement with Blake.
