2014 Year of the Woman in Country Music?

A major publication strategically placed the following headline on their front cover,  2014 is the year of the woman. It basically implied that Miranda, Reba, and others will “turn the tide of country music” this year.

Last year, some of the most heartfelt songs that resonated with music lovers came from women. People felt a connection to the storytelling that many of the female artists released. It was the topic all year long with entertainment writers. Women were expected to lead last year and in all reality Kacey Musgraves was the only one to get a real nod from industry voters. The CMT Artist of the Year program did not include one female artist….not one.

Now 2014 is supposed to come along and save the day for women?  Granted we are not even two months into the year but take a look at the charts and draw your own conclusion.

Luke Bryan – Drink A Beer

Jason Aldean – When She Says Baby

Cole Swindell – Chillin’ It

Lady Antebellum – Compass

David Nail – Whatever She’s Got

Frankie Ballard – Helluva Life

Thompson Square – Everything I Shouldn’t Be Thinking About

Blake Shelton – Doin’ What She Likes

Dierks Bentley – I Hold On

Eric Paslay – Friday Night

Randy Houser – Goodnight Kiss

Scotty McCreery – See You Tonight

Danielle Bradbery – The Heart of Dixie

Dan + Shay – 19 You + Me

Jerrod Niemann – Drink To That All Night

Eric Church – Give Me Back My Hometown

Rascal Flatts – Rewind

Brett Eldredge – Beat Of The Music

Brad Paisley – The Mona Lisa

Thomas Rhett – Get Me Some Of That

Brantley Gilbert – Bottoms Up

Justin Moore – Lettin’ The Night Roll

Keith Urban – Cop Car

Craig Morgan – Wake Up Lovin’ You

Kip Moore – Young Love

Jon Pardi – Up All Night

Josh Thompson – Cold Beer With Your Name On It

Sara Evans – Slow Me Down

Tim McGraw – Lookin’ For That Girl

Tyler Farr – Whiskey In My Water

My prediction is that we will see a little more leveling of the playing field. “Bro country” may die down a bit as the industry, including executives, has asked for something a little deeper. However, to jump as far as to say its the year of women is a stretch for me. Time will tell, watching the evolution this year will be interesting at the very least.
